Abstract

This study investigates the application of porous perlite in bio-coating mortar production, focusing on its bacterial immobilization capability and its effect on mortar properties. Mortar samples with different perlite contents of 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% were evaluated for unit weight, flexural strength, and compressive strength under two conditions: (1) standard environments and (2) wastewater exposure. Results indicate that the addition of perlite reduces flexural and compressive strength due to its lightweight and porous structure. However, no significant differences were observed between the two tested environments. This study highlights the potential of perlite in developing lightweight, durable, and efficient bio-coating mortar, making it a promising material for construction in specialized environmental conditions.
