Towards Net Zero Carbon Buildings in Vietnam
Abstract
Climate change has become one of the biggest challenges, with the construction industry accounting for a significant proportion of total CO₂ emissions. To achieve the goal of Net Zero Emissions in line with the COP26 commitment, constructing Net Zero Carbon Buildings (NZCBs) is a crucial solution from the present until 2050. This study evaluates overall carbon emissions throughout a building's lifecycle—from material extraction and manufacturing to construction, operation, and demolition—and analyzes mitigation solutions, including the use of low-carbon materials, design optimization, energy efficiency improvements, material recycling, and renewable energy development. Accordingly, we propose solutions to realize this goal for Vietnam, including the rapid development of NZCB standards, the implementation of pilot projects, and the establishment of a certification system to promote Net Zero Carbon Buildings, there by contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable development.
